This is a mini tutorial written and photographed by Doll Artist Sue Sizemore. This is shown on Sue's latest large doll, Alexandra, which is about 3 feet 7 inches tall.
Step 1: Attaching skull cap:
First, cut out a round circle of craft velour in matching hair color the close to the size of her head. Folded and tuck it to form it to the head. About four little pinned tucks. Quick stitches were made throughout the fabric and into the doll head to make it permanent.
Trim the "hairline" around the forehead and the around the ears.
I like to use meter thread and tack every two inches using
two to three stitches each thru the cap and into the doll's head along the wefting.
Step 3:
This picture shows starting the second row of Spiraling curls up and around head while tack sewing it. .

Step 4:
This picture shows the back of the head and I'm still spiraling the weft around.

This picture shows the back of head, nearly done!
At this point I begin using smaller 4 inch pieces of weft to fill in the bare spot wit a two inch.

Alexandra has wired arms and fingers, and weighted torso. Three wefts of spring curls from clothdollsupply.com made this very full head of curls on this large doll. She wears an antique Victorian child's dress, tights and a gold locket.
